They thought that they could hide their sins by pulling a blanket of forgetfulness over themselves. But instead they were scattered in every direction, terrified by fear, and spooked by nightmarish visions.
And while they thought to lie hid in their obscure sins, they were scattered under a dark veil of forgetfulness, being horribly afraid and troubled with exceeding great astonishment.
They thought that their sins had been secret and unnoticed, shielded from view by a dark curtain of forgetfulness, but now they were horribly afraid, confused, and terrified by ghostly forms.
For they, who supposed their secret sins were hid under the dark veil of oblivion, Were scattered in fearful trembling, terrified by apparitions.
For those who believed that their secret sins were unnoticed behind a dark veil of forgetfulness were scattered in fright and trembling, terrified by apparitions.
For thinking that in their secret sins they were unobserved behind a dark curtain of forgetfulness, they were scattered, terribly alarmed, and appalled by spectres.

For thinking that in their secret sins they were unobserved behind a dark curtain of forgetfulness, they were scattered, terribly alarmed, and appalled by specters.
And the while they guess them(selves) to be hid in (their) dark sins, they were scattered by (the) dark hiding of forgetting, dreading hideously, and disturbed (or troubled) with full great wondering. [And while they guess them to lurk in dark sins, by the dark veil of forgetting they be scattered, dreading grisfully, and with full much wondering disturbed.]
